Tyler Elementary School students, teachers, staff, and parents all gathered recently to celebrate the opening of the School Division’s 27th in-school financial branch. Student employees of Tyler Elementary's Yellow and Blue BB&T Tomcat branch, along with Tyler Principal Matthew Phythian, School Board member Don Richardson (Gainesville) and BB&T employees, cut a ribbon during a ceremony at the school’s fall Fun Fair Night. The crowd cheered and applauded as the ribbon pieces fell to the ground. The school's students will now be able to begin saving for the future by opening and managing bank accounts right at their own school. “BB&T is excited to continue their support of financial education throughout the county with the opening of this in-school financial branch,” said Mike Pybus, senior vice president of BB&T. By establishing the “Tomcat” branch at Tyler, BB&T is assisting PWCS in teaching students about making informed financial decisions. The partnership also creates a hands-on work environment for students to be engaged as bank employees, helping students earn valuable work experience and skills that will stay with them in the future.
![]() The “Tomcat” branch is the fifth BB&T in-school financial branch to open in a PWCS school. Beville Middle School and Antietam, King, and Leesylvania Elementary Schools also have BB&T branches within their walls, and plans are already underway to open a BB&T branch at Marsteller Middle School next year.
During the ceremony, Gainesville School Board Representative Don Richardson saluted BB&T for their continued support of the School Division, both through the bank’s financial literacy efforts and their support as an acting board member of the PWCS Education Foundation. “Their continued commitment to assist in the education of our children shows that BB&T really cares about education in this county,” Richardson said.
